Road Works on Chideock Hill.
You may have noticed, as you come down Chideock Hill, that a road sign is leaning over rather dramatically – this is because the land is slipping away from the road. This movement has been monitored by Connect Balfour-Beatty for some time, on behalf of Highways England.
The lane closure on Chideock Hill is in place ready for access for repairs to this land slip, which are planned to start imminently.
Connect-Balfour-Beatty has provided the following information to the Parish Council: –
Though the actual works will not be on the carriageway, due to the nature of the works being carried out there will be a need for a large number of vehicular movements in and out of the site during construction. The access to the work site was assessed and it was agreed that this was the safest way in which to carry out the works for road users and work force alike.
The timing of these works is not perfect – the original intention that they would be carried out during Spring 2020. Due to COVID-19 this was not possible. Consideration was given to postponing the works till the Autumn / Winter but due to likely weather conditions this was ruled out. Further assessment of the slip was carried out and it was decided that the works could not wait a further year without the risk of further damage being caused.
