As from tomorrow Wednesday 7th September until Tuesday 13th September Chideock is participating in the Dorset Architectural Heritage Week. This is an opportunity to see inside of buildings that are not usually open to the public. The times of opening will be daily between 2pm and 4pm. The Church of our Lady & St Ignatius in North Road will be specially opening the priest’s sacristy to show the wall paintings and give access to the barn chapel where mass was heard in secret during penal times. It is also an opportunity to visit The Weld Memorial Chapel (next to St.Giles Church) featuring the unusual ‘fish’ roof tiles. In 1852 Charles Weld designed and built this chapel in memory of his parents and decorated the interior with some remarkable wall paintings. Please take advantage of these ‘special’ openings to view these interiors which give a unique insight into both the architectural and historic events of Chideock’s past. If you visit the Church of Our Lady & St Ignatius do not forget to pop into the Chideock Museum while you are there – it is well worth the visit!
